Company of the Month

Neuropharma

Neuropharma is a Bio-pharmaceutical company owned by the Zeltia Group, which focuses on and is dedicated to Research and Development into innovative drugs for the treatment and prevention of diseases of the nervous system.

Neuropharma's objective is to become a reference company for nervous system diseases, especially neuro-degenerative diseases. Since its creation, it has had a prestigious and highly qualified team of scientists, always working at the forefront of technological innovation.

Although our short-term focus is neuro-degenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease, we plan to extend our development area to other nervous system disorders in the medium and long term.

To this end, in addition to the company's internal research projects, we have always undertaken external research projects in other complementary areas, which enable us to keep up-to-date with the scientific knowledge about the molecular basis of these pathologies.

The search for new therapeutic targets is one of our main goals, with the basic idea of achieving not only temporary improvements in patients' lifestyles, but also major changes in the progression of the disease, so that patients can maintain their quality of life on a permanent basis.

Strategy

Neuropharma was set up with the idea of exploiting the potential diversity of active molecules from biological systems provided by nature, specifically the sea, in the field of nervous system pathology. The biodiversity of nature has long been used with enormous success as the source of a many drugs available to modern medicine, whose active ingredients derive from molecules discovered in plants and micro-organisms from different land-based sources. However, the exploration, in recent times, of the sea's biodiversity as a source of new drugs has only just begun, and is now showing its potential with the experimental drugs of Pharmamar (another Zeltia company) which leads the field in the development of drugs of marine origin. Neuropharma has exclusive rights to use the huge library of marine organisms created by Pharmamar, for exploration and exploitation in the field of neurological diseases. At the same time, since its creation, the company has based its search for molecules with new pharmacological activity not only on marine biodiversity but also on the ability of its chemical laboratories to modify the structures found in order to generate new structures.

Many pathologies of the nervous system, especially degenerative ones, represent areas of enormous social need which currently lack effective therapies. Further, scientific knowledge of the molecular basis of these diseases is achieving crucial advances, which will allow the pharmaceutical industry to develop useful and effective drugs.

Neuropharma currently focuses on Alzheimer's disease by developing approaches which are able slow down or stop the neurodegenerative process. It is important to note that this is a multi-factorial disease which requires a combined pharmacological approach to the selection and development of drugs in order to give clear answers to the evolution of the disease.

The internal research carried out by the company which focuses on Alzheimer's disease, is complemented by external projects with academic centres. These projects are designed to promote and acquire new knowledge about the molecular basis of the pathologies of the nervous system and to benefit from future transfers of such scientific technology which will enable us to strengthen our research into these diseases.
